Development efforts on contraceptive vaginal rings were initiated over 40 years ago, based on two principles- the capacity of vaginal epithelium to absorb steroids and the capacity of elastomers to release these hormones at a nearly constant rate. This route of administration has many advantages, including the avoidance of gastrointestinal absorption and hepatic first pass metabolism, the great bioavailability, and others. Contraceptive vaginal rings are effective, provide a good cycle control, and improve the compliance as women are free from the daily pill routine intake.
