Context: An Overview of the hysterectomy process comparing the indication, complication rates and length of stay for different hysterectomy methods in the Gynaecology department at Darlington Memorial Hospital. Objective: To compare the length of stay of patients depending on the hysterectomy method i:e; Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, Subtotal Abdominal Hysterectomy and Total Abdominal Hysterectomy (midline and transverse incisions). The secondary aim is to assess indications for hysterectomy as well as analysing patient demographics and complications. Methods: All Hysterectomies undretaken over a 6 month period were analysed in a retrospective manner. Data collected from electronic records included indication, method of hysterectomy, age , BMI, length of stay and complications. Patients: A total of 111 patients were included in the study. Interventions: Patients who underwent different methods of hysterectomy i:e; Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy, Subtotal Abdominal Hysterectomy and Total Abdominal Hysterectomy (midline and transverse incisions ) were included in the study. Main Outcome Measures: 1. To assess the length of stay. 2. Complication rates between the groups. 3. To look at the size of the uteri in Total Abdominal Hysterectomy as compared to Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy. Results: 1. There was a significant difference in the length of stay of patients who underwent Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy when compared to those who underwent Total Abdominal Hysterectomy. Conclusions: As due to continuous strain on the NHS hospital beds, the short length of stay with Total Laparoscopic Hysterectomy appears to confer a high turnover rate of patients and may prevent bed blocking. With expanding expertise in Laparoscopic Hysterectomy and its benefits, th epossibility of the day case hysterectomy in District General Hospital is increasing.
